“The mass of men lead lives of quite desperation.”

December 6, 2009

I think this quote is referring to the belief that many people are living their lives unhappily but continue to go on and do what they need to. This relate to an earlier blog about tradition and habit. Many people do the same thing everyday and go through life without realizing they have control over the way their life unfolds. If your not happy you should change something to live your life in a more happy, healthy way. However many people live their life in this sense of desperation, or loss of hope. They don’t believe that they can change so instead they live their lives in desperation and boredom. Causing even more unhappiness.

Success Story

November 30, 2009

Finding an article that talks about any sort of benefit from the war in Iraq is so much harder than you expect. The media is really only focusing on the bad things coming from the war. Well in the search for an article I found one that talks about the city of Samarra found right outside of Baghdad, which was one of the key battlegrounds of the war. Even though the city now shows signs of the war with piles of debris and bullet holes in buildings it is again a destination spot for religious tourists. The city is now extremely safe, it is no longer a problem to just walk around the city. It used to hold a lot of hostility and fighting.  The city has grown drastically, when American troops first started coming to Samarra they would have rocks thrown at them  by citizens. Now the citizens have become somewhat dependant on the American troops and they are appreciative of what American troops have done for them. And now American troops are leaving and hoping Iraqis can take care of cities like Samarra themselves. The city of Samarra is one of the many  success stories from the war in Iraq that we just never hear about.

Habit & Routine

October 15, 2009

Are we really happy? Do we really just think we are happy because we follow our daily routine and habits that seem to fulfill our needs? We all create a schedule for ourselves and try our best to follow it, some of us must follow it to maintain sanity and others may not care if life takes them of their schedule. But some of us find ourselves hidden in our daily routine and habits, not changing a thing from day to day. And even though we may seem happy there is a chance we’re not and we’re just happy because we think we should be happy. Sometimes it takes a surprise or an event that throws you off course to make you realize your not as happy as you seem. Change is necessary in our lifetime to keep us going. After a while you might get bored with your daily routines and habits causing even more unhappiness. This surprise or event that throws us off our intended track can open our eyes to many things. Whether it be our state of happiness or just simply making you want to try something new these unexpected events can be what saves us and keeps us going.

What are we doing?

September 21, 2009

What are we doing? I can’t speak for everyone, but I think the majority of us aren’t doing anything. It’s so easy for us to forget and ignore these issues of poverty because we don’t live in it or ever experience it. It’s sad that we get so caught up in the tabloids and all of the materialistic items around us, when their are people like this little boy who hasn’t eaten in days or weeks. Maybe if we all tired to be more aware of what’s going on in the world, instead of just in our own lives, we’d have a better, more peaceful world to live in. Or even if you take another step and spend time working with organizations to help fight this issue. Donate any extra money you have at the end of the day, even if it is just loose change. Whether you just grow awareness or if you physically go out to help, you could have an impact on our world’s future, which might need some help. Pictures like this break my heart, it’s sad to see that this is a reality for many people, not a nightmare.. It really makes you realize how lucky we are.

Success

August 26, 2009

Success can have different definitions to different people. The dictionary defines success as “the achievement of something desired, planned, or attempted.” One might feel a sense of success just from finishing a paper, when someone else might not feel successful until they are own a million dollar house. I think some people achieve success through little everyday problems or activities in which you could say they use the word to loosely. Others don’t use the word until they’ve reached the absolute top. I think success is a word we can use loosely. I don’t believe anyone can define success for another. We all have our idea of success, and our own plan to achieve success. My success might be someone else starting point, and i think there is nothing wrong with that since we all have different plans for our future. Our society puts a stereotype on success. Such as your only successful if you are rich, have a family, important job, & etc. I don’t believe in this stereotype. I believe anyone can be successful if they have a positive attitude, and strive for the best, whatever that might be.
